Blacksburg gym collapse graphic

February 16th, 2010

After 36 years of operation, the Blacksburg, Va., High School gymnasium collapsed shortly before 1:37 p.m. Saturday. Fortunately, nobody was inside the building when it happened.
A tragedy was narrowly averted, though, as the high school girls basketball team was practicing in the gym earlier that morning and two maintenance workers examining cracks in the [...]

And so goes the carefree attitude of the Harley rider.
Roanoke was overrun this weekend (overrun in the good sense, of course) with thousands of Harley Davidsons for the Annual Harley Owners Group (HOGS) state motorcycle rally. I put together an interactive graphic that is very similar to the WWE graphic except without the [...]

In order to continue my week-long obsession with the WWE, I wanted to post this link.
Though the graphic went up Wednesday, I wanted to leave the photo of Mark Henry, Tony Atlas and me at the top of my blog for as long as possible.
Our rock-star photo intern John W. Adkisson had the idea to [...]

Saying goodbye to an era

June 11th, 2009

After a combined 88 years of operation, two Roanoke City School landmarks are closing their doors today.
The hallways of William Ruffner Middle and Raleigh Court Elementary schools will be silent tomorrow morning - a fact that is hard to imagine for some who have spent decades inside the schools’ walls.
To commemorate, I met with Susan [...]

A lazy Thursday

June 4th, 2009

I’m taking today off, which is odd because it’s a Thursday. I think this is the first midweek day off I’ve ever taken, and it feels a little weird.
Anyway, I wish I had more items to post. Truth is, I’ve been working on a lot of things that are going to be published [...]

We launched a Flash graphic today at noon that ties together all of the heroin trials that have circulated through Roanoke courts in the past few months.
I designed the graphic and was supplied the content through Mike Gangloff’s reporting on the issue. The whole thing was pulled together in under three days, which is [...]

As I promised yesterday, here’s the the May Wildflower graphic that ran today. I’m really happy with it because it incorporates audio, video and our new Flash template.
I also redesigned the April Wildflower graphic. It used to be a pop-out graphic that was pretty nifty in terms of navigation, but it wasn’t nearly as [...]

I’ve been busy lately, really. But the truth about this week-long drought is that my computer is getting slower by the day, and the simple task of posting a blog update from home is getting pretty frustrating.
But anyway, enough of my rants.
On Sunday, the Cabell Brand interactive timeline ran after more than a month [...]

Summer is around the corner

April 19th, 2009

What a beautiful weekend! The weather was incredible in Roanoke and Boone, N.C. (which is where I ended up thanks to a spur-of-the-moment decision Friday night).
But not getting off topic here, I wanted to just post links to two things that were published since my last post.
The first was a video on tire pile [...]

A good hectic

March 13th, 2009

As the title implies, this week has been a good hectic. Very busy, fun and fast, this week has flown by.
Here’s a glimpse of some things I’ve been working on starting with the flower Flash graphic. After looking over it, I think it’s probably my favorite Flash graphic I’ve ever done. This [...]
